I’ve recently been playing Rune Factory 5 (and tinkering in Rune Factory 4 for blogging purposes), so you can imagine how excited I was to have an official release date for Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma!
Marvelous Inc. announced the next installment in the beloved franchise is set to launch on May 30, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and Steam. (And May 30th is my birthday, so that makes it extra special to me.)
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is expected to reimagine the classic Rune Factory experience, blending familiar farming sim elements with new “village-building” mechanics in a stunning, Japanese-inspired world.
Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma Trailer
Azuma, the once-thriving eastern territory, now lies in ruin, its fate sealed by a calamity known as the Celestial Collapse. This disaster, triggered by a massive object crashing into the land, scattered its terrain to the skies and seas. The power of the runes that once sustained life was abruptly severed, and the gods of nature, weakened by the event, vanished entirely. Mountains crumbled, fields withered, and the people of Azuma were left with nothing but despair.
This adventure takes players to Azuma, a never-before-seen region in the Rune Factory universe. Here, you’ll take on the role of an Earth Dancer, a hero gifted with mystical powers tied to the natural world. Through graceful movement, powerful combat abilities, and resourceful farming, you’ll fight against the creeping corruption that threatens Azuma’s survival.
Here’s a glimpse of the features waiting for players according to the Steam page:
- Earth Dancer’s Powers: Harness the sacred power of dance to purify the land and heal the damage wrought by the Blight. Wield new tools and weapons, including the Bow and Talisman, as you battle corrupted forces and restore harmony to Azuma.
- Rebuilding Villages: You won’t just tend to your farm—you’ll rebuild entire communities! Strategically place buildings to draw people back to the villages, revive the gods of nature, and restore the flow of valuable resources.
- A Stunning Japanese-Inspired World: Explore Azuma’s breathtaking landscapes, each imbued with seasonal charm and traditional aesthetics. From vibrant festivals to unique events and creatures, every corner of this land is steeped in beauty and culture.
- Meaningful Connections: Choose between male and female protagonists and build deep relationships with a diverse cast of characters, including mortals and gods. Fully voiced scenarios allow you to befriend or romance your favorite candidates, who can also join you in battle.
One thing I noticed while hopping into RF4 and RF5 this month was that the transition from 2D to 3D was pretty clumsy. In Rune Factory 5, the village is quite empty and the assets are uninspired, to say the least. But a lot of my concerns are being addressed in the Guardians of Azuma trailer already. Everything feels busier, more alive, and laid out with attention to not leaving gaps of nothing between each building.
I’m also excited to get some voice acting in the series, even if it’s just for key moments and scenes!
