Tiny Bookshop: A Tiny Game Packed with Joy

Tiny Bookshop is a cozy business management game about—you guessed it—running a tiny bookshop. Released on August 7, 2025, Tiny Bookshop sits at an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam at the time of my writing this article. It doesn’t really compare to other expansive life sims business games, instead it’s more like Sticky Business. Sweet, simple, colorful, and addictive as heck.

Tiny Bookshop starts out like all of my very favorite cozy game titles: Leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life to settle into a cozy pursuit somewhere quaint and idyllic. You’ll arrive in Bookstonbury with a car and a cart, ready to open shop by the sea. Pick which genres you want to stock on your shelves, add items and decor to boost sales, and park in various lots around town to attract different customers.

You’ll also get a daily subscription to the local newspaper, where you can buy used books, see upcoming events, and check the weather. The calendar can help you narrow down what part of town you want to be on that day—beside the beach on a hot, sunny day vs the cafe for a rainy one.

Customers will often need recommendations to help with their purchase. They will describe their must-haves—genre, length, era—and you can point out any books in your current collection that might be a good fit. It’s a bit of a cozy puzzle game here as you make educated guesses based on custom descriptions.

All the titles on your shelf are real books. I was recommending things like Dracula, Gone Girl, Hamlet, and Artemis Fowl to my visitors. It was such a delight to spot my favorite authors popping up in my shop: William Shakespeare, Margaret Atwood, Stephen King, and Toni Morrison among them.

You don’t need to have read the books to participate, though. Author name, genre, length, publish date, and synopsis are all provided. The difficulty comes more from trying to marry a wishlist of requirements to a single title. Someone might want a fantasy, a classic, under 400 pages, and published recently. You have to figure out what’s most important and match it to what’s currently on your shelf.

What ends up on your shelf is a bit random, though. You can fill up the store by genre, color-coded to make it easier to gage visually, but you don’t have much say in what titles appear. So there’s a lot of luck involved with being able to meet people’s requirements and requests, which definitely gets frustrating after a while.

You’ll get to know the local denizens as they visit your shop on occasion. Musician Klaus has writer’s block while trying to compose a song; Harper needs help collecting sea shells for her marine biology project; Maryam wants to test your business acumen to see if you are a fit for her entrepreneurs club. These little sprinkles of character side-stories help keep things fresh.

For the most part, you shop in the newspaper, pick where to park, decorate and fill your shelves, make 4-6 book recommendations to customers, and then repeat. Most cozy gamers will fall in love with the core premise but find it a tad repetitive, I think.

Completionists will have the most fun with this cozy game title. There are side quests and achievements sprinkled everywhere, and some you really have to do digging for. If you have a gaming notes journal, now is the time to break it out. You can record which books sell best in what environment, and store tidbits about character questlines.

As I was playing Tiny Bookshop, I couldn’t help but wish it were a cozy mobile game. The easy-to-jump-into cycles, the short days, the slow build-up of store progress, the compact experience…it really would fit well on a smartphone ecosystem like Apple Arcade. Overall, it was a quaint and calming experience that I will definitely go back to, even if it really cemented that I can’t handle the stress and unknowns of running small biz. Ha!

Final thoughts:

  • Tiny Bookshop is cozy to the extreme—vibe, gameplay, pace, everything
  • Great for cozy gamer bibliophiles, who will love seeing their favorite titles pop up
  • Easily one of the most calming cozy games I’ve played
  • Small and simple—might feel repetitive to some players

Stay cozy, gamers!
